Suede — a Popular Material

Suede is a type of natural leather with a distinctive velvety surface. It is obtained by processing the inner (dermal) layer of the hide, which has particularly strong fibers. Unlike smooth leather, suede has a fuzzy texture on both sides.

For military footwear, several types of suede are used:

Velour — a dense split with short pile.
nubuck — a variety with minimal polishing that retains the natural texture of the leather.
Suede with coatings — treated with special compounds to improve water-repellent properties.

Practical suede tactical footwear is mostly made of velour or nubuck with additional coatings. These materials combine lightness, strength, and breathability. Leading manufacturers such as LOWA and 5.11 Tactical use split leather with a thickness of 1.8–2.2 mm for the optimal balance between protective properties and weight.

The soft material has many advantages:

Breathability — allows the foot to "breathe," reducing sweating even under intense load.
Elasticity — the material stretches up to 30% without losing shape, adapting to individual foot characteristics.
Lightness — split leather is 15-20% lighter than smooth leather of the same strength.
Quietness — an important advantage for stealth movement.
Wear resistance — with proper treatment, the material doesn’t crack or wear out at flex points.
Thermal insulation — the material retains heat in cold weather and doesn’t overheat in summer.
Camouflage properties — the matte surface does not cause glare.

Comfortable suede tactical sneakers are better suited for hot climates as they provide excellent ventilation. Universal demi-season boots made of suede are often supplemented with Gore-Tex membrane, ensuring waterproofing without compromising breathability.

However, it should be noted that untreated split leather is sensitive to water. When wet, it loses shape, becomes heavier, and requires special care when drying.
