It was developed for the needs of the US Army in 1942 and was widely used by military personnel until the 1980s. After the army canned ration was replaced by MRE. To this day, can openers of this type are used in the American military Tray Rations, which are used during rescue operations. As of 2024, the US Shelby Co P series can opener is still being manufactured and sold to the general public.
